Most essential institutions in society have developed in response to an overwhelming need...

Sixteen years ago, I lost a patient in India who couldn't make it to Texas for an open heart surgery. But now people have the opportunity in India to access the best that healthcare has to offer worldwide. Our state-of-the-art equipment, backed by the world's best professionals, equals those available globally. To that extent, Apollo's mission may have been accomplished.

Fifteen years into being called a pioneer and leader in revolutionizing healthcare in India may have been ample reason, traditionally, to rest on our laurels. Not at Apollo though. We realize that today, people measure companies' strengths by an array of more demanding criteria than just who-came-first. Quite the way Apollo measures itself.

By constantly measuring our deliverables, we have succeeded in creating infrastructure that meets the needs of the future that incorporates the latest technology and provides superior healthcare delivery systems. Our immediate agenda includes setting up of healthcare facilities in all major Indian cities, 23-hour hospitals, pharmacies, a pharmaceuticals business and finally, a Health Maintenance Organization that will give millions of people access to all these facilities. This is an agenda for a country which is seeing rapid growth.

Our mission is also to transcend the realm of curative care. With a new focus on preventive care, Apollo is going beyond medicine to bring health to the individual.

As the 21st century approaches, we stand committed to building an infrastructure that will create an environment that protects and nurtures our future generations.

---Awards and Innovations:

New Avenues of Cardiac Surgery:

Most of our bypass surgeries are performed off-pump or without using heart lung machines. We even have the expertise to perform complicated surgeries like acquired Ventricular Septal Defects without a CPB.

This reduces complication to a great extent and helps patients recover faster. The use of mammary arteries instead of Saphenous veins of legs does away with long incisions in the legs and provides longer patency of the graft.

Excellent pain management, graded physiotherapy and co-ordinated post-operative care ensure rapid recovery of patients and an early return to normal, active life.

A number of peripheral bypasses have saved several patients from the need for amputations.

Renal Transplant in the youngest patient in Eastern India:

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals have performed a Renal Transplant on the youngest recipient in Eastern India - a seven year-old child. The boy was born with a single kidney, which started malfunctioning after a few years. His deteriorating kidney function took a heavy toll on his tiny body, and he suffered from high blood pressure and multiple medical complications.

A kidney transplant was the only option before the family and his father was found to be matching donor. It was difficult to accommodate an adult kidney in a child who, although 7 years of age, looked hardly 4 or 5.

Connecting adult arteries (average cross-section of 9-10 mms) with that of the little boy (arteries as thin as 3 mms) was also challenging. However with the immense expertise of the doctors and support of the paramedical team, the surgery progressed smoothly.

The donated kidney began to function normally within 48 hours. The little boy was discharged within a few days and continues to do well.

Specialised Clinics:

The hospital has a number of Specialised Clinics that offer advice, treatment and tips to patients and their family.

They range from an Epilepsy Clinic run by the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery to a Cardiac Rehabilitation & Preservation Clinic under the Department of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
