Overview

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which a small fiberoptic telescope (arthroscope) is inserted into a joint. Fluid is then inserted into the joint to distend the joint and to allow for the visualization of the structures within that joint. Usually the surgery is viewed on a moniter so that the whole operating team is aware of the type of surgical procedure that is being performed.

What Is Arthroscopy ?

Arthroscopy is surgical procedure, which is used to diagnose and treat problems within the joint. A small fiberoptic arthroscope is inserted into a joint through a small incision (surgical cut) in the skin. The fiberoptic arthroscope is approximately 5 mm in diameter consists of a small camera mounted at the tip of a narrow tube with a light source. The arthroscopic procedure can be viewed on a monitor by the operating team. The patient is put into local or general anesthesia. During the surgical procedure which is of about 30 minutes to an hour, the patient faces less risk and gets best result after the surgery.

The arthroscopic surgery can help to identify the damaged tissue present in the bones. The most common type of arthroscopic surgery include removal of loose debris, trimming of damaged cartilage, removal or repair of a torn meniscus, and ligament reconstruction.

Arthroscopy Is Used To ?

in the diagnosis and treatment of many noninflammatory, inflammatory, and infectious types of arthritis .To identify the location of the loose bodies and the spurs diagnose problems inside of a joint (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, or ankle ) ,remove bone or cartilage , repair tendons or ligaments

Results After Arthroscopy :

Arthroscopy is a procedure where a small cut of about 1/8th of an inch is made. The patient undergoing arthroscopic surgery can leave the hospital the same day, but an overnight stay is advisable. The patient may experience minimal pain. Normal ambulation is after two weeks.

How Is Arthroscopic Surgery Performed ?

When a knee arthroscopy is performed, a camera is inserted into the joint through a small incision (about one centimeter). The arthroscopic surgery camera is attached to a fiberoptic light source and shows a picture of the inside of the joint on a television monitor. The surgeon uses water under pressure to "inflate" the knee allowing more maneuverability and to remove any debris. One or more other incisions are made to insert instruments that can treat the underlying problem. For example, a shaver can be inserte .

Is Arthroscopic Surgery Safe ?

Understand that arthroscopic surgery is a surgical procedure and involves risks. These may include infection, blood clots, problems with anesthesia, etc. These are serious risks and the decision to undergo arthroscopic surgery should be taken seriously. That said, arthroscopic surgery is a "less invasive" procedure, and when performed for the right indications (meaning the right problems) it is often very successful. Ask your doctor for more information about arthroscopic surgery, and talk about the possible risks of undergoing the procedure.
