Types of surrogacy

The fertilization of the embryos can occur in multiple ways and each of the way of fertilization has their own implications on the genetic relationship of the new born living being with the surrogate mother and the intended parents.

There are two types of surrogacy being practiced. These surrogacy is as follows:

Traditional surrogacy

This is also referred to as Partial, genetic or straight surrogacy. As one can infer from the name Traditional Surrogacy, this involves natural ways of becoming a surrogate. Sometimes it also involves the artificial insemination.

In This type if the sperm of intended father is used during the insemination, the newborn is likely to be genetically related to the father and the surrogate mother. Whereas in case the donor sperm is used the new born is neither related to intended parents nor the surrogate mother. During the insemination both the intended parents and surrogate mother is involved, therefore the doctors or the fertility center help in assisting and counseling them both thorugh the procedure.

Gestational Surrogacy

It is the another name of host or full surrogacy. This involves the implantation of the embryo created through the IVF procedure into the surrogate mother’s womb, which also refers to the gestational carrier sometimes. The newborn from this type of surrogacy is not related to the surrogate mother at all. This can take place in many of the forms while some are listed as follows:

  • Creation of embryos using the intended father’s sperm and mother’s egg, thus getting genetically related to the intended parents.
  • Creation of embryos using intended mother’s egg and donor sperm resulting in new born related to the intended mother.
  • The creation of embryos using intended father’s sperm and donor’s egg resulting in genetically related child to intended father.
  • Implantation of donor embryo directly into surrogate resulting into genetically unrelated child.
S urrogacy success rates depends on many factors and these cannot be determined in advance that how successful the surrogacy will be for you. Therefore it is difficult to determine its success rates. Even though the success results of the surrogacy treatment provided at WE CARE HEALTH SERVICES are very good . The various factors on which the success rate depends are as mentioned below:
  • Age of egg donor (if applicable)
  • Gamete quality which has been provided by intended couple
  • Fertility treatment success in past
  • Ability of surrogate to conceive

Depending on the type of surrogacy treatment carried out, the risk associated with them varies. For details about surrogacy type refer above.

Primarily the risks associated with the gestational surrogacy are similar to the risk identified for IVF.

Refer to risk of IVF for detail The other risks associated with the surrogacy is that there are limited chances of transfer of the HIV and hepatitis from the one individual to another involved in surrogacy. Therefore, it is encouraged to undergo screening test prior to the commencement of the procedure. IUI is also recommended for the surrogates and the intended couple. If the donor of the licensed fertility center are brought into use for treatment than it can be assured that they have been screened in advance.
S urrogacy agencies, fertility clinics, intended parents they all look for the surrogates who can deliver a healthy baby. There are some criteria on the basis of which the surrogates are selected which can also be referred to as the qualification of the surrogates. The qualifications are as follows:
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Have delivered at least one healthy child
  • Had past history of pregnancies without any complications and were full term
  • Age should be less than 43 years
  • Have a stable living situation
  • Does not indulge in bad habits of smoking and abusive alcohol
  • Will the agency be responsive to them?
  • Will there be secondary point of contact if the parents are unavailable?
  • Does the firm operates as team?
  • Can they meet the surrogates personally?
  • Can they evaluate the environment of the surrogates?
  • Can they have the past health records of the surrogates?
  • Is the surrogate untouched of criminal cases?
Some of the questions are asked if the intended couple hire a surrogate from some agencies whereas other are also valid if their find the surrogate themselves. These days, the intended parents prefer to search out for surrogates independently. Although, it is encouraged to obtain some legal advice before making the agreement for both the intended parents and the surrogates.
