Overview

Vasectomy Introduction

Vasectomy is a procedure in which the two tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urinary tract are surgically altered so sperm cannot pass through and be released to fertilize a woman's egg during sexual intercourse. For couples who have made the decision not to have any further children, vasectomy is the safest and easiest form of surgical sterilization. While reversible in many cases, vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control.

Advantages:
  1. It is very effective and is a permanent method.
  2. Nothing to remember except to use condoms or another effective method for the first 20 ejaculations or the first three months, whichever comes first.
  3. It does not affect the ability to have sex.
  4. No apparent long-term health risks.

Disadvantages:
  • Common minor short term complications of surgery:
--- Usually uncomfortable for 2 to 3 days
---Usually uncomfortable for 2 to 3 days
--- Brief feeling of faintness after the procedure
  • Uncommon complication of surgery:
--- Bleeding or infection at the incision site or inside the incision
--- Blot clots in the scrotum

The first 20 ejaculations after vasectomy may contain sperm. The couple must use another contraceptive method for the first 20 ejaculations or the 3 months---whichever comes first.

During the Procedure

  • You will be asked to change into a gown and lie on the examination table. The incision site will be washed, shaved, and sterilized, usually with an iodine solution. Sterile drapes will be placed over you to guard against infection.
  • After a local anesthetic is administered, a small opening is made in the scrotum. Either the right or left vas deferens is lifted through this opening. The vas is cut, and a section may be removed. You may feel a slight pulling sensation during this process.
  • The 2 ends of the vas are cauterized (heat sealed), tied, or clipped before being returned to the scrotum.
  • The opposite vas deferens is then lifted through the opening for the same procedure.
  • The remaining opening can heal with closure by stitches or naturally without stitches.
