If you have minor symptoms, you will probably require little or no treatment. If you are among the minority who suffer moderate to severe symptoms, then some form of symptomatic treatment might be necessary

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis

Injury : - cervical spondylosis can be caused by previous injury, repeated fractures or dislocations of the joints of neck. These cause abnormal tear of joints, ligaments and the structures surrounding the joints.

Bad posture : - Incorrect posture adapted by habit or due to poor skeletal set up in the neck predisposes abnormal tear of the neck joints.

Occupational strain : - The physical discomfort, which arises through an occupation is occupational stress. The physical strain, intensity of work and duration of working hours all constitutes the occupational strain.

Body type : -
Body type also predisposes cervical spondylosis

  1. Thick necks with hump at the back
  2. Long backs
These body types are more prone to cause strain or tear of the neck tissues.

Life style : - The various styles of activity adapted in daily life can cause strain or tear of the structures of the neck and lead to cervical spondylosis. An example is awkward positions adapted while sleeping

What are the symptoms of spondylosis ?

  1. Neck pain (may radiate to the arms or shoulder)
  2. Loss of sensation or abnormal sensations of the shoulders, arms, or (rarely) legs
  3. Weakness of the arms or (rarely) legs
  4. Neck stiffness that progressively worsens
  5. Loss of balance
  6. Headaches, particularly in the back of the head
  7. Loss of control of the bladder or bowels (if spinal cord is compressed)

Diagnosis Of Spondylosis

  • A pain in the neck or in the lumbar region that continues to get worse is a sign of cervical spondylosis.
  • A spine X-ray shows the abnormalities that indicate the cervical spondylosis.
  • An X-ray of lower lumbar spine may reveal degenerative changes in this region.
  • A CT scan or spine MRI confirms the diagnosis.
  • A Myelogram (X-ray or CTscan after injection of dye into the spinal column)may be recommended to clearly identify the extent of injury.

Chiropractic
Chiropractic is the science of adjusting the spine through manual manipulation. A chiropractor focuses on the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Doctors of chiropractic believe in the body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medicine. The main theory of chiropractic is that the spine must be properly aligned. If the alignment is not correct, then the nerves will not be able to send the proper signals to their respective bodily destinations. The spinal adjustment is thought to balance the spine, creating good general health.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture for back pain is the science of using ultra fine needles (and sometimes electricity) to regulate the flow of chi/qi (life energy) through the energy meridians in the body. If the energy in the body is balanced, then the person will be in good health. If the energy is imbalanced, then illness or injury will occur.

Back Pain Injections
Back Pain Injections are also commonly called epidural injections. Epidural spinal therapy started in the early 1900s and is most often used to treat lower back pain. Epidural injections are given directly into the painful area of the back via hypodermic needle as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.

Heat or Ice for back pain
Heat or Ice for back pain...which do you use? The best answer depends on the circumstances of the pain condition. Heat and ice are medical traditions going back thousands of years. They are free (or cheap), easy to use and available for home back pain relief.

Massage therapy
Massage therapy is a general term for many different individual types of massage. Basically, all types of massage can be described as hands-on manipulation of the soft tissue and joints of the body. Massage is known to stretch the muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as increase local circulation of blood. This makes massage one of the best temporary physical treatments for oxygen deprivation back pain. Massage therapy can be traced back at least 5000 years as a back pain treatment and relaxation therapy.

Massage can be a soothing or stimulating treatment, depending on the style and the therapist. Generally, the overall feeling given to the recipient is stress reduction and overall relaxation. Massage therapy is one of the best ways to remove metabolic waste from the muscles (such as lactic acid buildup).

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy for back pain is a very common conservative treatment option for a variety of painful conditions. Physical therapy is used for many purposes including pain relief, muscular conditioning, post injury rehabilitation and back surgery recuperation. Physical therapy is an important facet of a recovery program for many patients and a qualified physical therapist can play an vital role in allowing a patient to move past their pain and lead a symptom-free life in the future.

Knowledge Therapy
What used to be considered alternative medicine for back pain has now mostly become the norm. Medical doctors are teaming up with chiropractors, acupuncturists and other complementary care providers. The only true alternative therapy for back pain left is KNOWLEDGE THERAPY. This is the alternative to the alternative treatments for back pain...

In order to find a cure for back pain, it is important to know all the things that are wrong with your body. However, it is also important to learn all the things that are NOT WRONG. Many times, a painful condition is not the result of a physical cause. Sometimes, a very physical pain syndrome has an emotional cause. Knowledge therapy makes a strong case for the placebo and nocebo effects on the health of a person.

Surgery for Spondylosis

Back surgery should always be a final option. Surgery to correct spinal arthritis is usually a very invasive procedure and is grueling to endure. Surgery is usually performed if there is significant evidence of a pinched nerve, caused by bone spur formation.

Common procedures used to correct spondylosis are:

Foraminotomy
Laminectomy
Spinal Fusion
