Overview

For those looking for an alternative to invasive plastic surgery, a non-surgical facelift might be a great solution. There are different techniques for a non-surgical facelift, most of which are better suited for younger people who are just beginning to show signs of aging. Some new methods are now targeting people in their 40s and 50s, especially those experiencing sagging skin and deeper wrinkles.

A non-surgical facelift has several advantages. For one, it is cheaper than surgery. While a traditional facelift can cost upwards of 10,000 US dollars (USD), a non-surgical facelift can cost as little as 2,000 USD. Another important advantage of choosing a non-surgical facelift is the shorter recovery period and lower risk of post-operatory infections and complications.

There are many options for people considering a non-surgical facelift. The newest and most popular method is called Thermage. Thermage is performed with a machine that heats the upper layer of the skin through radio waves. This action accelerates cellular repair and leads to firmer skin. Thermage requires no anesthesia, and patients can go home the day of the procedure.

Another popular type of non-surgical facelift is microcurrent therapy (MT), which uses electricity to speed up the production of collagen. MT improves blood circulation and stimulates the facial muscles, acting like a workout for the skin. This is the preferred method for people looking to lift sagging skin or reduce a double chin.

Doctors consider ThreadLift a type of non-surgical facelift, even though a needle is used. Thin, tiny pieces of thread are inserted under skin tissues to lift the brows and sagging skin in the face and neck. ThreadLift leaves no scars and has no downtime for patients.

An Introduction to Non-Invasive Tissue Tightening

Of the new crop of skin tightening procedures, the two that are best known are the proprietary procedures Thermage and Titan. While these two treatments utilize different proprietary technology, the idea is essentially the same, in that they both aim to heat the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis) in order to effect a “healing response”. This healing response encourages increased collagen production and remodeling of existing collagen. Supportive underlying tissues of the skin contract, resulting in a tighter, more uplifted appearance to the skin.

Special Advantages

Unlike with ablative lasers or chemical peels, there is no peeling of the top layer of skin, and therefore the procedures are more suitable for patients with darker skin tones, because of the significantly lowered risk of pigmentation changes. The cost is also considerably less than surgical facelift, and because the procedure is non-invasive (no cutting) there is usually no need to take time off from work.

Risks, Recovery, & Downtime

Pain management is hardly an issue, as some of these procedures require the use of local anesthetic and / or over-the-counter pain killers, while some use nothing at all. All incorporate some sort of means of cooling the skin during the treatment.

For most patients, there is no downtime, although a few people may have excessive swelling or redness, or even temporary skin blanching (whiteness) immediately following a treatment. More serious risks include bumps, blistering, permanent pigmentation changes, or skin depressions, although these are rare. Extremely rare incidents of scarring or infection have been reported.
