Overview

The three "landmarks" of the face are the chin, nose, and cheek areas. When one of these three is out of proportion, the face may appear unbalanced.

Strong cheekbones have always created an illusion of beauty. By increasing the definition of the face, the overall appearance is enhanced. Shallow cheekbones, resulting from heredity or the re-absorption of bone tissue occurs naturally as we age, creating a flat, hollow look. Early facial sagging is corrected with the implants, creating much the same effect as the facelift. Prominent cheekbones also enhance the appearance of the eyes.

A soft elastic implant is inserted through an incision in the mouth or under the chin. Occasionally a suture is needed to hold the implant in place until the body's tissue conforms to the implant in roughly 3 days.

Results will be apparent immediately following surgery, though swelling and bruising will subside gradually over the next two to three weeks.

Who Is A Candidate For Cheek Implant Surgery?

Every person having malar deficiencies, congenital defects, inherited bony structure or being aged is a candidate for Cheek Implant surgery. 18 years is the minimum age required for undergoing this surgery, but some people get rid of their baby fat as late as the early twenties. It is advisable to go for this surgery once the face has fully matured.

Age Group: Cheek augmentation is indicated for two distinct groups: Young adults with deficient cheek development. These patients may also need a simultaneous reduction of the nose. Young and older patients with poor definition of the cheek area who may also require lower facelift.

How Is The Surgery Performed?

The first step for this type of surgery is to have a detailed consultation with the surgeon to confirm which shape and size of cheek will suit you the best. While women desire softer and rounder cheeks enhancing their feminine charms, men on the other hand want a chiseled look or angular cheek to get the perfect masculine appearance. During the surgery the patient is anesthetized and then a small incision is made in the area where the implants will be placed. The incision is generally made in the fold below the lower eyelashes or inside the upper lips. Then the surgeon goes on to create a pocket where the implants are placed. After this the pocket is stitched with a more solid tissue to ensure that the cheek remains in place.

Options: Injections of Perlane or New-Fill may allow soft tissue correction but the results last for 6-24 months and are not permanent. The result is less predictable although no surgery is required. Fat injection is inconsistent and results may be short-lived.

Recovery: Bruising is usually minimal but can occur. Swelling lasts for about two weeks. The contour will continue to change after this point and the final appearance will not be apparent until six months after surgery.

Risks and complications: Potentials risks of all surgery are bleeding and infection. Specific risks of placement of a cheek implant are damage to the nerves providing sensation and movement to the upper lip. Surgery is performed in the space next to the bone so that the implant is safely positioned and the nerves are protected. The infra-orbital nerve which provides sensation is identified and by using the space next to the bone and the underlying masseter muscle, the facial nerve which provides movement to the face, is protected as it passes above. Transient weakness of both nerves is possible after surgery. Other risks of surgery are asymmetry of the implant, wrong position or wrong size. For these reasons all of these factors are evaluated during surgery to obtain the best result.
